Atherton

The Atherton Shire is on the Atherton Tableland southeast of Cairns, Queensland, Australia.

AthertonHere is a photo of the township and surrounds from a local mount. Click on photo to see large size.

There is a link to the news about Atherton in the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) news, in the blogroll.

There are photos of the May 2007 demolition of the Atherton Maize silos in the flikr site. This was certainly a Queensland heritage site that private owners decided would look better as a box with shops in it. The three maize silos in Atherton, Tolga (also demolished) and Kairi are among the first of constructions of its type in the southern hemisphere in 1920’s. There are photos I took in 2006 before the demolition.

September 2007. The Qld government has amalgamated many shires in the State. Atherton is now amalgamated with Mareeba, Eacham and Herberton, to make a super shire called Tablelands. I think, in driving time, the new Tablelands shire is 5 hours east – west and 5 hours north-south.
