Missing Out by Adam Philips

Book Cover "Missing Out"Not to be confused with long time ABC interviewer, Phillip Adams, this interview with psychoanalyst, Adam Philips, is worth a listen.

In the introduction to his new book Missing Out, Adam Phillips argues that all of us lead two parallel lives: the life we actually live and the one that we wish for and fantasize about.

And so in a sense we share our lives with the people we have failed to be. And this can become the central story of our lives – almost an elegy to unmet needs and roads not taken.

Philips elevates frustration to a highly valued frame of mind, our motivation for adapting to the world as it is. His take home message of psychoanalysis is to get people to more enjoy each others company.

It’s a compelling way of thinking about ourselves and how we behave and how we might then achieve any sort of satisfaction or happiness.
